You thought it was simple, right? You’re filling the bath, looking forward to a soak and shaking in a few drops of your favourite oil.
Oh, no, no no. You’re making some common mistakes here.
But here’s the way to get the perfect essential oil bath.
Essential oil must be mixed with a carrier oil.
Oil and water don’t mix. Essential oil is no different. Put straight into bath water, it just sits on top. Combine 3 – 12 drops of oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil like coconut, olive or jojoba for an effective aromatic and therapeutic bath.
Keep in mind that essential oil is potent stuff. So, without a carrier oil, it can have direct contact with our skin. (and delicate areas – peppermint oil! Ouch!)
Choose your oils carefully.
We may love the scent, but again this oil is going on our skin in a bath and essential oils are powerful. Be cautious with oils that can irritate skin and mucous membranes. Avoid cinnamon, clove, oregano, spearmint and thyme. Go for skin loving oils – lavender, camomile and rose.
Don’t add oil to hot running water. The oil will evaporate and become room scent. To get the most from your bath, add the oil with carrier oil once the bath is full and the water is off.
Finally, oil will make your tub like a skating rink. Slippery! So be extra careful getting in and out.
