Want dewy, glowing skin, despite the weather? Skin needs care in the harsh winter months.
Temperatures fall, wind strips moisture and central heating sucks out any moisture that’s left. Skin can be left feeling tight, dry and a bit dull. If you are unlucky, dryness can escalate to flaking and skin problems like acne or eczema.
We recommend organic and natural products. Well, we would, wouldn’t we? Most ‘regular’ products contain strong chemicals to give quick fixes to skin problems. The dryness of winter skin makes it more delicate and vulnerable to harsh chemicals. Organic and natural ingredients work with the skin, boosting it gently.
And be aware, the cleansers and toners good in summer won’t be as effective in the winter. The environmental factors are different. Skincare is seasonal!
1. Cleanse, cleanse and cleanse.
It’s the mantra of all skin experts, and the first step to healthy skin. Have a regular cleansing routine and keep to it. Avoid alcohol-based cleansers, especially the ‘lazy’ facial wipes. They can remove eye make-up but they don’t really cleanse at all.
Massage cream cleanser in circular movements and always remove with moist cotton or a warm water rinse.
– For winter, find organic products with Lavender and aloe vera for gentle, deep hydration.
– Coconut oil and calendula hydrates and is good for sensitive skins – soothing itches, redness and bumps.
– Honey for moisture and its antibacterial power.

2. Scrub Up
Exfoliation is important in winter to remove dead skin cells and dirt and keep up the skin’s brightness. Look for natural products that contain oatmeal, coffee grains or olive or apricot kernels to gently remove the dead layers of skin and clean pores. A good moisture base like coconut, olive or grape oil to your exfoliant will keep it gentle and moisturizing.
We recommend Bioselect Organic Face Scrub 50 Ml £23.50 from Beauty Expression (at organics.com)
3. Oil Checks
Winter means making sure you’re topped up. Dry winter skin needs natural oils to keep soft and hydrated. Rosemary, sage and peppermint are wonderful oil extracts to use or look for in the ingredients and will gently put moisture back into your skin without clogging the pores. And they smell amazing.
We recommend Flawless Skin Repair Serum from Spa Secrets 4 U. Its natural ingredients are impressive – pure essential oils: neroli, ylang ylang, peppermint, lavender, lemongrass, geranium, rose geranium, clary sage and rosemary. Moisturising beeswax, propolis and royal jelly. Raw, unrefined, unprocessed and fair trade: cocoa butter and raw unrefined shea butter.
4. Moisture Defender
A quality moisturiser will act as a barrier defense against the elements. Again, the light moisturiser you used in the summer needs re-thinking for winter’s extremities. Think richer and deeper and always SPF. Use rich organic day and night creams with shea butter, for example.
We recommend Women Collagen Retinol Day Moisturiser – Spf25 – 50ml from organics.com. It’s not cheap but it’s
packed with beneficial, nutritious oils and ingredients including organic rosehip oil, shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil and Salix Alba’a unique spring water formula.
5. Problem Solvers
Winter conditions can cause problems if you have very sensitive skin. With extreme dryness, and the effects of the weather, rosacea and acne can flare up. The ingredient you want here is ‘neem’. It’s the powerful little secret of organic skin care for skin problems. Neem oil has been found to improve skin elasticity and has a positive effect on patients with symptomatic acne. Look for it in toners, moisturisers and scrubs. If you’re the super sensitive type, try ingredients like tea tree, aloe vera and rosehip. All gentle with calming and anti-bacterial properties.
We recommend Refining Anti-acne Facial from Exquis Skincare with neem oil, Sandalwood and coconut butter. This is a great anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory cream that coats and protects the skin leaving its super soft.
If you aren’t already a convert, experiment with some organic and natural skin products. Beautiful natural ingredients, no harsh chemicals, and generally paraben and sls free. They wont have been tested on animals and will most likely have been produced ethically.
What’s not to love?
You’ll will glow through the winter and be ready for that first spring sunshine. Naturally.
